ELLE Columnist E. Jean Carroll Accuses Donald Trump of Sexual Assault

“My last rich boy pulled down my tights,” ELLE columnist E. Jean Carroll writes in her forthcoming book, What Do We Need Men For? excerpted today in New York Magazine. “My last rich boy was blond. He grew up to be the president of the United States.”

In the memoir, Carroll reflects on her history with “hideous men,” including a harrowing encounter with Donald Trump whom she accuses of sexual assault.

“Hey, you’re that advice lady!” she recalls the then-“real estate tycoon” saying to her as she walked out of Bergdorf Goodman in New York City in late 1995 or early 1996. She says that Trump asked her to help him pick out a gift for “a girl” and she agreed, eventually walking with him to the lingerie section.

The moment the dressing-room door is closed, he lunges at me, pushes me against the wall, hitting my head quite badly, and puts his mouth against my lips. I am so shocked I shove him back and start laughing again. He seizes both my arms and pushes me up against the wall a second time, and, as I become aware of how large he is, he holds me against the wall with his shoulder and jams his hand under my coat dress and pulls down my tights.

She writes that Trump, who was fully clothed, penetrated her before she was able to “get a knee up high enough to push him out and off,” running out of the dressing room and the store.

The White House denied Carroll’s claim, saying, “This is a completely false and unrealistic story surfacing 25 years after allegedly taking place and was created simply to make the President look bad.” Carroll writes that she told two friends immediately after it happened, which both friends confirmed to New York.

Carroll has written ELLE’s Ask E. Jean column for the past 26 years.
