In 2021, perfume sales skyrocketed by as much as 45 percent, according to reports from market research firm NPD Group, thanks to a boom in demand driven by the pandemic. Many people looked to pick up a slice of affordable luxury during extended periods at home, and fragrance was the easy way to do it. (That’s even despite the spike in perfume prices by 15 percent due to the supply chain crisis.) At the same time, this was when TikTok started trending, and pretty soon, #PerfumeTok was born.
Users began recommending their favorite fragrances, popular dupes, and when to wear them. Even TikTok influencers like Addison Rae launched their own fragrance lines. There are even some cult classic scents that have quickly become must-haves after trending on TikTok, regularly selling out every time they hit the shelves.
